Master Data Management

Know what was true, and when you knew it

Effective dating separates when a value applies from when it was recorded, so future changes can be staged and past decisions can be explained.

The capability

Two timelines on every value

Ordinary version history records when a value was changed. It cannot express that new payment terms apply from next quarter, or that a correction entered today should have applied since July. Businesses need both answers when invoices, prices and hierarchies are audited.

Autonera stores master data values with a valid-time range and a recorded time. As-of queries return the value valid on a business date as it was known at a particular moment. Future-dated changes can be approved now and take effect automatically, and backdated corrections are recorded without rewriting what systems believed at the time.

Effective dating applies to attributes, relationships and hierarchies, so a reorganization, a supplier's new remit-to address or a customer's new parent can all be scheduled and later explained.

How it works

Query supplier payment terms across two timelines

Change the business date and the date the question is asked from. A backdated correction changes the answer only for questions asked after it was recorded.

Problems it solves

Where this work usually breaks down

  1. 01

Future changes entered too early or too late

Teams wait until the effective date to enter changes, or enter them early and break current processes.

  2. 02

    Corrections rewrite history

Fixing a value loses the evidence of what was used for past decisions.

  3. 03

    Audits reconstructed by hand

Finance cannot easily answer what terms applied to an invoice.

  4. 04

    Hierarchy changes without dates

Reorganizations take effect immediately rather than on the agreed date.

In industrial operations

A manufacturer reconciles supplier terms with finance

Payment terms changed mid-year and a later correction revealed that the contract specified different terms, creating disputed invoices.

  1. Renegotiated terms were approved in advance with a future valid date.
  2. A contract review recorded a backdated correction.
  3. Finance queried terms as known at each payment run.
  4. Disputed invoices were explained with both timelines.

Result: The organization can show what applied, what was believed and why each payment was made.

Autonomous operations

How autonomous execution changes effective-dated master data

Agents schedule effective-dated changes, detect overlaps and notify downstream systems when values activate.

Agents carry out

  • Validate gaps and overlaps in validity ranges
  • Activate future-dated values on schedule
  • Notify systems when values become effective
  • Answer as-of questions with evidence

People decide

  • Approve future and backdated changes
  • Decide correction policy
  • Own temporal reporting

  • Approvals for corrections

Buyer FAQs

Questions evaluators ask

How is this different from version history?

Version history records changes. Effective dating also records when each value applies in the business, so future and backdated changes are possible.

What is bitemporal data?

Data with two time dimensions: valid time, when a fact applies, and recorded time, when it was known.

Can downstream systems receive future-dated values?

Values can be published on activation or in advance with their effective dates, depending on what the destination supports.

Does this apply to relationships?

Yes. Parent relationships and hierarchy membership can carry validity ranges.

Are overlapping ranges prevented?

Validation detects overlaps and gaps based on rules configured for each attribute.
