Data Governance · quality, stewardship, lineage

Controls that hold, even when agents do the work.

Rules, policies, ownership and approvals apply equally to people, integrations and autonomous agents. Every exception has an owner, every value has lineage, and every decision leaves evidence.

Select a violation, trace where it entered, then decide. Your decision is written to the audit trail.

Data quality and completeness

Quality you can trace to a rule

Validation, completeness, consistency and timeliness are measured per domain, family and channel. Readiness for a destination is a rule set, not a guess.

Completeness78%
Validity91%
Consistency84%
Timeliness69%

Scores are computed from the rules each domain owner activates, so a score always explains itself: every missing point traces to a named rule and record.

Policies and approval workflows

Who may change what, and who must approve

Policy is the boundary between autonomous execution and human authority. It is configured by attribute class, not decided by the agent at runtime.

Stewardship and ownership

Every domain, family and rule has an accountable owner. Exceptions route to them with context, priority and age.

Exception management

Exceptions are records with state: open, proposed, returned, resolved. Blocking exceptions hold channel publication until cleared.

Audit history

Before and after values, the actor (person, integration or agent), the rule and the approval are retained together.

How it works

The working sequence

  1. Define

Owners activate validation, completeness and compliance rules and assign severity per channel.

  2. Evaluate

Rules run as data arrives and on schedule. Failures become exceptions with lineage attached.

  3. Propose and route

Agents attach evidence-backed proposals. Policy decides whether a person must approve.

  4. Decide and record

Stewards approve, return or reject. Rules re-run and the decision is written to the audit trail.

Autonomy and its boundaries

Agents clear the backlog. Governance stays yours.

Autonomy makes governance practical at catalog scale: rules are evaluated continuously and most exceptions arrive with a proposed fix. It never makes the decision that policy assigns to a person.

Autonomy improves

  • Continuous rule evaluation instead of periodic audits
  • Proposed corrections with cited sources
  • Lineage assembled automatically for each exception
  • Routing to the right owner by domain and rule

People hold authority

  • Owners define rules, severities and thresholds
  • Regulated and structural changes require named approvers
  • Agents cannot approve, override or disable a rule
  • Reviewers can reverse applied changes where reversal applies

Evidence retained

  • Rule result before and after each change
  • Actor, source document and confidence
  • Approval decision and approver identity
  • Channel holds and releases

Industrial examples

Where this shows up

Industrial distributor, safety category

SituationHundreds of PPE items reference certificates that expire on different dates across suppliers.

How Autonera handles itAn expiry rule opens exceptions ahead of time, agents link newly received certificates as proposals, and only the compliance owner can approve before marketplace publication resumes.

Valve manufacturer, global catalog

SituationPressure ratings arrive in mixed formats from regional engineering teams.

How Autonera handles itValidity rules against a governed reference list block non-conforming values; lineage shows which mapping introduced them so the source is fixed, not just the record.

Electrical wholesaler, acquisition

SituationAn acquired branch's catalog lacks weights, breaking freight quotes.

How Autonera handles itCompleteness rules surface the gap, calculated weights are proposed with their formula, and stewards sample-approve before freight systems receive them.

Buyer questions

How are data quality rules defined?

Rules are configured per domain, family or attribute as validation, completeness, consistency and compliance checks. Each rule has an owner, a severity and a defined consequence, such as warning or blocking publication to a channel.

Can autonomous agents approve their own changes?

No. Approval authority is assigned by policy to people or roles. Agents can propose and, where policy explicitly allows for low-risk attributes, apply changes — but they cannot satisfy a human approval step.

What does lineage show?

Lineage traces a value from its source through mappings, transformations and rules to the channels that consumed it, so a steward can see where an error entered and what it affected.

Is there an audit trail for every change?

Changes are designed to be recorded with who or what made them, the before and after values, the rule or evidence involved and any approval decision. Retention and export options are subject to product confirmation.

Can governance block publishing?

Blocking rules can hold a record from specific channels until resolved, while warnings let it proceed with an open exception.

Does this replace our data governance council?

No. Autonera operationalizes the policies your council sets. Structural decisions — taxonomy, reference lists, ownership — remain with your people.
