What is Product Data Management (PDM)?

Definition

PDM oversees the collection, organisation, updating, and distribution of product information across its lifecycle. It ensures all stakeholders have access to accurate and current data. A PIM is a core system enabling structured and scalable PDM practices.

In engineering contexts, PDM often means revision-controlled technical data; here the term also covers broader product-data practices. For example, an autonomous product data operation could take an engineering-approved fixture revision, use authorized revision information to identify affected product specifications, and prepare content updates without bypassing engineering change control.
