What is Data Redundancy?

Definition

Data redundancy occurs when identical information is stored in multiple locations. While sometimes intentional for backup, excessive redundancy leads to inconsistencies and storage inefficiencies. PIM prevents redundancy by centralising product truth.

Uncontrolled duplicate information differs from intentional replication used for resilience. For example, an autonomous product data operation could take two supplier records referring to the same fixture, identify duplicate business information using approved matching rules, and propose consolidation without deleting valid supplier relationships.

Data Redundancy in an autonomous operation

  1. Step 1:

    Input

Two supplier records referring to the same fixture

  2. Step 2:

    Data Redundancy

Identify duplicate business information using approved matching rules

  3. Step 3:

    Outcome

Propose consolidation without deleting valid supplier relationships
