What is Data Normalisation?
Definition
Data normalisation standardises formats, units, naming conventions, and attribute values across datasets. In PIM, this includes unifying measurements or removing variations like “Red/RED/Red.” It ensures consistency and improves search accuracy.
Normalization in operational data often means consistent values; database normalization is a separate structural concept. For example, an autonomous product data operation could take measurements expressed as cm, centimetres, and millimeters, convert them to the approved unit and numeric representation, and retain the original values for traceability.
